2003: The Last Reading

Descent Archive fragment — the disappearance

The last instrument reading before Yusuf Karim disappeared was 0.

Not zero as in null, not zero as in instrument failure. Zero as in: the sensor was working, the probe was at depth, and the measurement returned 0.

This was not possible. The probe measured electromagnetic flux. The baseline in that valley, at that elevation, at that season, ran between 0.3 and 0.7 microtesla. Zero would mean total absence — not low flux, not anomalous flux, but the complete absence of the field that underpins the measurement. The instrument had no scale for that. The zero it returned was the zero of a system that had run out of units.

Martine Leconte, logging at the surface, wrote: probe reading 0.00 μT at 14:32:07. Anomalous. Yusuf confirming. She wrote this while Yusuf was still at depth with the hand instruments. She was mid-sentence — Yusuf will recheck with manual probe before we — when she stopped getting responses on the radio.

This is documented. The log entry exists. The mid-sentence stop.

What is not documented is what she thought in the 90 seconds between the radio going silent and Kalinda pulling her away from the shaft. Kalinda's report says only "Martine appeared disoriented" and "we moved her to a position with clear sightlines and adequate ventilation." It doesn't say what Martine was doing during those 90 seconds. The report is written in the convention of field documentation, which does not have a field for what the researcher appeared to be trying to understand.

The inquest report, four months later, concluded: probable technical failure of communications equipment concurrent with undetermined accident. The word "undetermined" appears seven times in the report. The investigators, to their credit, were careful with it. They did not mean we don't know. They meant: there is a category of things for which we do not have the right instruments to determine.

That distinction mattered to at least one of them. His name is not in the public-facing report. His name appears once in the supplementary working notes, in a footnote, next to a sentence that reads: The zero reading is not an absence. It is a register beyond the scale of the instrument. We need different instruments.

Nobody published this. The working notes were not circulated.

Three years later, Martine published a paper on electromagnetic measurement anomalies in remote terrain. It was methodologically careful, peer-reviewed, and cited twelve times over the next two decades. It did not mention the zero reading, or the mid-sentence stop, or Yusuf. That is not because she had forgotten.

That is because there is no journal that publishes what she would have needed to say.
