Winter Survey

The entrance to the mine is a rectangle of black in the hillside, framed by snow that has drifted against the timber cribbing. Claire stands outside for a moment before going in, breathing the cold that smells of iron and old wood, waiting for her eyes to adjust to nothing. The thermometer on her pack reads eighteen degrees Fahrenheit. Inside will be warmer. Inside, the bats will be slightly warmer than the air, which means they are metabolizing, which means they are burning reserves they cannot replace until spring. She knows the math on this. She has known it for eleven years.

She switches on her headlamp and enters.

The beam catches limestone walls beaded with condensation, the wooden rails of the old cart track, a rusted spike driven into rock at some depth of time she cannot guess. She's surveyed this mine since 2013. Before that, someone else did — she has the records going back to 1987, counts on paper in three different handwriting styles, each year a number and a note. Calm colony. No disturbance. ~4,200 big browns. The notes get shorter as the years go on and the counter becomes more confident, more routine. By the late 1990s they are single numbers with no annotation. Just the count.

She was not the person who started watching this colony. She will not be the last. But she is the one here now.

The first chamber opens wide around her. She slows, moving the lamp in a slow arc, giving her pupils time. The ceiling comes into focus: furred with bats. Brown bodies the size of a folded hand, each wrapped in its own wing membrane, each face turned into the limestone. They are in torpor. If she coughs, some will rouse slightly, reshuffle their positions with a sluggish irritability. She has learned not to cough. She breathes through her nose.

She begins the count.

This is the part that people misunderstand when she tries to explain her work. They imagine she counts individuals, bat by bat, the way you might count students in a classroom. What she actually does is establish a grid — she's marked the ceiling with small dots of orange paint, a yard apart — and count bats per grid cell, then multiply, then add a correction for the irregular sections at the back of the chamber. It is estimation. It is formal estimation with a known error range. When she writes 3,800 in her notebook, she means somewhere between 3,400 and 4,200, with 3,800 as my best inference given the method. This is what science is: not certainty, but calibrated uncertainty, and knowing the difference.

She works methodically. The cold is entering through her boots. She does not hurry.

In 2012, the year before she took over this route, white-nose syndrome reached Virginia. She remembers reading the reports the way you read news of a storm that has not yet reached your county — with attention, but at a remove. The disease is a fungus, Pseudogymnoascus destructans, that grows on hibernating bats during winter torpor, when their immune response is suppressed to save energy. It irritates the skin, wakes the bats early, depletes their fat reserves. They come out in January, February. There is no food. They starve. A cave can go from several hundred thousand bats to a few hundred in three winters. Some caves have gone to zero.

She finishes the main chamber and moves deeper, through a low passage she has to duck under even now, after eleven years. On her way past she checks the temperature gauge she mounted in 2015: thirty-four degrees Fahrenheit, normal. Her breath fogs in the lamp beam.

The second chamber is smaller. She completes her grid. The count is coming out, so far, within normal variation. She does not let herself feel relieved. She has made that mistake before — felt relieved in the second chamber and then reached the back gallery and found the anomaly she had missed because she was no longer watching with the same quality of attention. You have to watch as if it matters all the way through, even when all the evidence is good, because the evidence you haven't seen yet is the evidence that matters.

She moves into the back gallery.

The ceiling is lower here, more irregular. She has to work her grid differently, approximating cells by eye. She is halfway through when she sees it: a section, maybe eight grid cells wide, where the count is wrong. Not catastrophically wrong. Not zero. But the density is down by roughly a third.

She stands still for a long time.

The rest of the colony is normal. She finishes the count. When she adds it up, the total is around 3,200 — down from 3,700 last year, 3,800 the year before, 3,850 the year before that. A reduction of about fourteen percent year over year. Within the range that could be statistical noise. Outside the range that has ever been statistical noise.

She writes the number in her notebook. She writes: possible early WNS indicator — back gallery density anomaly, approx 8 cells, reduction ~30% from prior 3yr mean. Awaiting next survey for confirmation. She does not write what she is thinking, which is that this is how it begins, that the number will be lower next year and lower the year after that, that this is the before side of a before-and-after that will eventually be obvious to anyone looking at the data.

She takes two photographs of the ceiling of the back gallery. She takes one of the main chamber. She notes the time: 11:14 AM. She notes the air temperature, the humidity, the condition of the entrance structure.

On her way out she passes through the main chamber again, and she stops and looks up at the ceiling one more time. Thousands of small bodies, each one burning a little of its stored fat just to stay alive through the winter. Each one in something that looks like death but isn't. She knows the biology of this, knows it is a deeply adaptive strategy, knows that for the hundred-thousand years before the fungus arrived these bats wintered successfully in this exact posture, in this exact cave, in this exact cold. She knows all of this.

She stands there looking up.

The mine entrance, when she reaches it, gives her the daylight like a doorway thrown open. She blinks. The snow is very bright. The sky above the ridge is the pale blue of midwinter, cloudless, the kind of cold that is beautiful because you are only in it briefly.

She takes off her pack and sits on a flat rock outside the entrance and opens her thermos and drinks. The coffee is still hot. She writes one more note, at the bottom of the page, not in the standard format: this may be the last good year. Or it may not be. We will see. Then she caps the pen and closes the notebook and sits in the cold for another few minutes, not thinking about anything in particular, looking at the ridge, listening.

A chickadee calls from somewhere in the trees. The sound carries clearly in the cold air.

She puts her thermos away, shoulders her pack, and starts the walk back to the truck.
